The Disk Defragmenter dialog box appears, click the drive you want to defragment and then click the Analyze button. After analyzing a dialog box appears saying whether you should defragment the analyzed drive. To defragment the drive, click Defragment button. This will take a long time depending upon the size of your disk and data.

> Repair Disk Errors : Click Start, then click My Computer, In My Computer window, right-click the disk you want to scan for bad sectors and then click Properties, click the Tools tab, then click the Check Now button. NO POWER

This is a situation when the CPU does not switch on; you first need to check the power supply point if there is supply. Does the power LED in front of the CPU switch on? Is the power supply (SMPS) fan which is behind the CPU running? Is the flea power LED on the system board lit? Eliminate all spike guards or stabilizers. You have to check if the power cables are properly plugged in and the SMPS switch which is behind the system is on, voltage selector switch/voltage regulator module set to 110V or 220V (will defer depending on the country in which you are).

Power LED/SMPS fan off, but flea power LED on the system board on: Likely cause could be control panel failure / I/O panel failure / cable from I/O panel to system board / system board / power supply (SMPS).

Power LED/SMPS/fan/flea power LED off: Likely cause could be system not plugged in / unplugged cables on system board / wall or power strip outlet / power cord / power supply (SMPS).

Power LED/flea power LED on, SMPS fan off: Likely cause could be SMPS / voltage selector switch/voltage regulator module.

NO POST

Power On Self Test (POST) is when the system tests all its hardware components before booting to OS. Sometimes the system hangs at pre-boot screen, this is a screen where you see the manufacturer logo or the system checking/detecting the processor, RAM, hard drive and CD/DVD drive. Common cure for this issue is reseating the RAM, if still doesn’t work reseat the processor, other solutions are unplug all external peripherals (eg. USB devices, printer etc.), unplugging all internal hard disk / CD-DVD / floppy cables and power connectors and the cards in the motherboard slots (eg. Modem, LAN, display, sound), then introducing them back one-by-one and checking the system to eliminate the faulty component causing the system to hang at POST or NO POST.

NO BOOT

You get video signal to the monitor but OS doesn’t load. In this situation check for error messages on screen to trouble shoot. Check in the FDD (floppy) & CD/DVD for any bootable media in the drives. Can be due to the presence of a faulty bootable media in these drives. Enter the BIOS setup by pressing ‘Delete’ or ‘F2’ (refer system manual) and see if the HDD (hard drive/disk) is detected and the boot sequence. Corrupt OS or important boot files missing can also cause NO BOOT. The best way to locate the fault is to read the error message displayed to know the exact issue.

HARDWARE FAILURE

Improperly installed or corrupt software is one of the reasons for hardware failure. You need to first see if the proper drivers are installed, try uninstall/roll back the drivers and reinstalling. If you do not have the driver CD that was supplied by the hardware manufacturer try download from the manufactures site, please also see that you are downloading for the same model and OS.

You can also try reseating and changing slots, which works if reinstalling drivers doesn’t. If it’s an external peripheral try connecting it to a different port or connector and then reinstall the drivers. If still doesn’t work try a different computer, if one is available, if it works then there is a problem with your computer configuration. You may try reinstalling the OS, if still the problem exists, there is a problem with the system.

When the hardware fails on the different slot/port/connector of your computer or a different computer the problem is most likely with the hardware. You need to replace the hardware.

WARM BOOT & COLD BOOT

A warm boot is accomplished by pressing the CTRL+ALT+DEL key combination, this warm-boot process usually does not go through the complete boot process; usually, it skips the power-on self test (POST) to save time. In addition, a warm boot normally fails to reset all adapters in the computer's adapter slots.

If you use the Reset button to cold boot the computer, it normally restarts the boot procedure, including the POST. This method does not necessarily terminate power to the motherboard. If the power is not interrupted, the cold boot may fail to reset all adapters in the computer's adapter slots.

* To assure that all adapters are properly reset, you should utilize the power switch to turn off the computer. Leaving the power off for ten seconds ensures that all the capacitors on the motherboard have time to discharge and must also give the hard disk drive an opportunity to stop revolving.
